Contemporary Ballet Artist supports the development of dancers across the related styles of neo-classical, contemporary ballet, and contemporary dance. The programme is designed to nurture versatility, creativity, and performance quality at every stage of the process.
Semi-Final Stage
All participants begin in the semi-final round, which consists of:
A contemporary ballet workshop, including a warm-up class
The initial learning of one of the three set solos
A creative task, designed to explore musicality, interpretation, and originality
Dancers are encouraged to demonstrate their ability to integrate classical technique with contemporary movement approaches.
Finalist Selection
A number of dancers are then selected to progress to the final stage. These finalists:
Receive video resources to learn the remaining two solos (for a total of three contrasting works)
Participate in a workshop day focused on coaching and refining their performance of all three solos, working directly with the choreographers
Final Performance
Finalists perform all three solos live in a theatre setting before a panel of expert adjudicators. In addition to the solo performances, dancers take part in a short group presentation developed in collaboration with a guest choreographer.
One of the three solos is curated from our sister competition, Contemporary Ballet Choreographer, with the remaining works created by guest choreographers.
Adjudication and Recognition
Dancers are assessed based on technical strength, interpretative quality, and overall performance. Awards are given on individual merit, and there is no fixed number of prizes or rankings. This approach allows for a more personalised recognition of achievement, focusing on artistic development rather than comparative placement.

Silver Medal
